Steel Under a Gulf Coast Sun
Metal building and shop insulation around Pensacola comes down to two problems: heat and condensation. An uninsulated steel roof in July turns a shop into an oven by midday, and Wikipedia's climate normals list an average July high of 91.6F for the city. When the building is cooled, or when the night air drops toward the dew point, warm, humid air touching the steel condenses and drips onto tools, vehicles and stored goods. The same thing happens in a closed building after a rainstorm. Insulation that covers the metal and seals it off from the humid air solves both.
Why closed-cell foam suits steel
Closed-cell spray foam bonds directly to steel panels, purlins and girts. With the metal covered, humid air cannot reach the cold or hot surface, so condensation has nowhere to form. At R-5 to R-7 per inch in HomeGuide's figures, it reaches useful R-values without bulk, and it seals the many laps, seams and fastener holes in a metal building at the same time. Faced fiberglass blankets can work, but once the facing tears or the seams open, humid air gets behind them and they sag and hold water. Many of the buildings we look at have exactly that problem.
How you use the building sets the plan
A shop with a mini-split cooled to working temperature every day needs more insulation than a storage building that only needs to stop dripping and stay a bit cooler. A boat or RV barn falls in between. We ask what you store, whether you cool or heat it, how often you work in it and whether there is a loft or office. For storage, a thinner layer of closed-cell on the roof may be all that is needed. For a cooled shop, we look at the walls, roof and the big doors, which are usually the largest leaks.
Garages and workshops
Attached garages pick up heat through the roof and the overhead door and pass it into the house through shared walls and ceilings. Detached garages used as workshops get the same thinking as a small metal building. If there is a bonus room over the garage, sealing and insulating its floor keeps both the heat and the exhaust fumes out of the room above.
Fire protection and coatings
Foam in an occupied shop or garage usually needs a thermal or ignition barrier, depending on the product and how the space is used. We explain what applies and price the coating or covering as its own line, so you can choose between a sprayed coating, a liner panel or another approved finish.
New buildings and storm rebuilds
The easiest time to insulate a metal building is after the steel is up and before wiring, shelving and equipment go on the walls. A lot of shops and barns around Pensacola were built or reroofed after hurricanes, and if you are planning a rebuild, bring us in early. In existing buildings, clearing a strip along the walls and covering equipment speeds the job and keeps overspray off your belongings.

Metal Building & Shop Insulation Questions
Will spray foam stop my metal building from sweating?
That is one of the main reasons owners foam steel buildings. Closed-cell on the roof and walls keeps humid air off the metal, so condensation stops forming.
How much foam does a shop need?
It depends on whether you cool it and how often you use it. A storage building may only need enough to stop condensation; a daily work shop needs more. We set the thickness by use.
Is foam better than fiberglass blankets in a metal building?
Blankets work while the facing stays intact, but in humid air torn facing lets moisture behind them. Foam bonds to the steel and seals the seams, so it holds up better.
Does foam in a garage need a coating?
Often, yes. Foam in an occupied space usually needs a thermal or ignition barrier, depending on the product and use. We tell you what applies and price it.
