Insulating One of the Oldest Cities in the Country
Spray foam insulation in Pensacola has to fit a housing stock that spans well over a century. Tristan de Luna landed here with about 1,500 settlers on August 15, 1559, and while that first colony failed, the city that grew back from 1698 on has layer after layer of houses: wood-frame Victorians and bungalows near downtown, block and brick ranches from the post-war decades, and infill and rebuilt homes after the storms. The 2020 census counted 27,892 housing units inside the city limits. Each era of house leaks heat and humidity in its own places, and we plan the work around that.
Historic neighborhoods
The North Hill Preservation District alone holds 425 historic buildings on about 156 acres, listed on the National Register in 1983. Houses of that age usually have balloon framing or open cavities, raised wood floors over a crawl space, plaster walls and attics with whatever insulation was added over the years. Foam is often the right tool for the floor over the crawl space and for wall cavities opened during renovation, while the attic floor is often better served by sealing and blowing in. If your house is in a historic district, exterior changes may need review, but insulation work inside the house generally does not change how it looks.
Post-war ranches
Across much of the city, the typical house is a single-story ranch on a slab with a low-pitched roof and the air handler and ducts in the attic. The attic is the whole story in these houses. A sealed ceiling with blown-in to depth, or a foam-sealed roofline that brings the ducts inside, are the two choices we lay out.
Storm repairs
Pensacola took Ivan on September 16, 2004, Dennis in July 2005 and Sally in September 2020, which flooded downtown. Many houses had roofs replaced and walls opened during repairs. If your walls are open, that is the time to spray them. If the attic got wet, the insulation should come out rather than stay.
Cost and rebates in the city
HomeGuide's national figures put an attic spray foam job at $3,000 to $8,000 and a crawl space at $2,000 to $4,000, while sealing plus blown-in on an attic floor usually costs less. Older Pensacola houses can land on either end: tight crawl spaces and plaster ceilings with lots of penetrations add time, while a simple ranch attic goes quickly. If FPL is your electric company, its Northwest Florida page lists a $220 instant rebate on ceiling insulation for homes currently below R-8, through an FPL-approved participating contractor, so ask about it before the work starts.

Pensacola Questions
Can you insulate an older raised house in Pensacola?
Yes. The floor over the crawl space is usually the first priority, with closed-cell foam on the underside of the subfloor or a full encapsulation. The attic is handled separately, often with sealing and blown-in.
Does insulation work need approval in a historic district?
Interior insulation does not change the outside of the house, so it generally falls outside exterior design review. If you are also changing windows, siding or the roof, check with the city first.
My ranch house's ducts are in the attic. What do you recommend?
Either seal the ceiling and blow in to depth over ducts in good repair, or foam the roofline so the ducts sit in conditioned air. We price both after looking at the attic.
Is there a rebate for insulation in Pensacola?
FPL's Northwest Florida page lists a $220 instant rebate for ceiling insulation in homes currently under R-8, done by an FPL-approved participating contractor. Check current terms with FPL.
How much does spray foam cost for a Pensacola house?
HomeGuide's national range is $1.50 to $5.00 per square foot installed, with a whole house at $8,000 to $20,000. Older houses with tight access cost more to work in. We send a written price after looking, and that is what you pay.
